Why the world moved on from plastic glitter

Conventional glitter is a microplastic. It is cut from PET film, it does not break down, and once it washes off a face at a music festival it travels through drains, rivers and eventually the ocean. A single weekend of glitter across a large event site adds up to a surprising amount of plastic that nobody is ever going to sweep up.

Regulators noticed. The EU microplastics restriction, Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, phases out intentionally added microplastics in a long list of products, loose plastic glitter included. What used to be a values based choice is now becoming a compliance based one, and festivals, venues and brands across Europe are updating their supplier lists accordingly.

There is also a skin story here that people talk about less. Cheap plastic glitter has been found to carry heavy metals and phthalates, and it is cut with sharp edges that can scratch skin and snag hair. Plant based glitter is softer and kinder to wear for twelve hours straight.

What biodegradable glitter actually is

Real biodegradable glitter starts life as cellulose from eucalyptus trees. That cellulose film is coloured and cut into the same shapes and sizes you know from plastic glitter, so it behaves the same way on skin, but it is food for microorganisms once it enters the natural environment. In soil, where warmth, water and microbes are all present, the process is fastest and typically takes around 90 days.

A word of warning, because the market is messy. Plenty of products are marketed as eco glitter while still containing a polyester core with a thin biodegradable coating. If a brand cannot tell you what the base film is made from, assume plastic. Ask for the base material, not the marketing word.

Festival glitter: how to actually wear it

Festival glitter is the most popular use of eco glitter and also the one people get wrong most often. Loose glitter needs an adhesive, and the adhesive decides whether your look survives the first support act or the whole headline set.

On face and body. Start with a thin layer of glitter glue, aloe vera gel or a plain balm on clean, dry skin. Pick up chunky glitter with a flat cosmetic brush or a fingertip and press it on rather than sweeping it. Pressing keeps the flakes flat and reflective. Sweeping drags them into streaks.

On hair. Work hair gel or aloe vera through the section you want to sparkle, then press glitter into the roots or along a parting. Glitter roots photograph beautifully under stage lighting and survive a full day of dancing.

On eyes and cheekbones. Fine glitter suits inner corners and lids. Chunky glitter belongs on cheekbones, temples, collarbones and shoulders where there is room for the flakes to catch light.

Removal. Lift the bulk off with the sticky side of tape or a cotton pad soaked in micellar water or oil, then wash normally. Because the glitter is plant based, whatever goes down the drain is not adding plastic to the water system.

Practical festival tip: bring a small pot rather than a big one, keep it in a sealed bag, and apply in daylight before you go in. Nobody has ever done good glitter work by phone torch at 11pm.

Eco glitter for events, weddings and brand activations

Events are where sustainable glitter earns its budget. Wedding planners, festival organisers, nightclubs, gyms, ski resorts and brand teams all use glitter because it photographs well and gets shared, and all of them now face questions about waste.

Edible glitter for drinks: the EAT ME range

This is a completely separate product category, and mixing them up is the single most common mistake in the glitter world.

Cosmetic glitter, including biodegradable cosmetic glitter, is not food. It is not tested as food, it is not approved as food, and it should never go near a cocktail shaker. Our cosmetic products are labelled clearly as not edible for exactly this reason.

How to use edible glitter in drinks. Take the tip of a small teaspoon, stir it into the drink, or sprinkle it across the surface just before serving. It works in alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks alike. The effect is strongest in light coloured sparkling drinks, where the bubbles keep the shimmer moving and the light has something to bounce off. Prosecco, gin and tonic, sparkling lemonade, clear mocktails and champagne cocktails are all excellent. Dark drinks like cola or red wine swallow the sparkle.

Where else it works. EAT ME Clear is genuinely multi purpose. How to tell real eco glitter from greenwashing

Use this checklist before you buy from anyone, including us.

1. What is the base film? The answer should be plant cellulose, not polyester or PET.
2. Is it certified? Look for a named, verifiable technology such as Bioglitter and a certified user status, not just the word eco on a label.
3. Is it cosmetic grade? Craft glitter is not made for skin, no matter how pretty it looks.
4. Is it edible or not? If a product does not explicitly say edible or food grade, it is not. Non toxic does not mean edible.
5. Does it comply with the EU microplastics restriction? Retailers and event organisers in the EU increasingly need this in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is biodegradable glitter safe for skin? Cosmetic grade plant based glitter is made specifically for use on face, body, hair and nails. Our glitter is free from the heavy metals and phthalates found in some cheap plastic glitters, is antimony free, and is around 40 percent softer than conventional glitter, with no sharp edges to catch on skin or hair.

How long does biodegradable glitter take to break down? It depends on the environment. Biodegradation needs water, warmth and microorganisms. Soil provides the best conditions, and in soil the material typically breaks down in roughly 90 days.

Can I put biodegradable glitter in my drink? No. Biodegradable does not mean edible. Use a product from the EAT ME edible glitter range, which is made and labelled for food and drink.

What is the best glitter for a festival? Chunky cosmetic eco glitter applied over glitter glue or aloe vera, on cheekbones, temples and hair roots. Chunky flakes throw more light and photograph better than fine glitter.
